ABOUT THE WEST OAKLAND YOUTH CENTER

The West Oakland Youth Center is Home.  The WOYC is a premier youth and young adult development institution and emerging racial justice Center in West Oakland, CA.  We aim to provide a healthy sense of Home for all that we serve.  We honor the traditions, rituals, and cultures of our Homelands; our programs and activities provide skills and training to youth and young adults that support healthy Homes and healthy futures; and we serve as a Home amidst a changing West Oakland.  At the heart of our work is our commitment to justice and systems change for our communities.

Alongside our community residents, elected and appointed officials, our advisory group and our program partners, we provide a holistic approach to youth and young adult development.  Our programs and activities focus in five areas of development: (1) arts and media, (2) personal development, (3) health and wellness, (4) workforce development, and (5) education development.  Our state of the art building has a performance stage and auditorium that hosts more than 200 people.  Our commercial kitchen, a gem in the community, serves as a learning lab for participants to develop pathways to meaningful restaurant and culinary employment opportunities. Our training rooms, including a fully equipped computer lab, support learning and development.  We aim to provide meaningful leadership and workforce opportunities to support our youth and young adults to take the power to control their lives.
